When the kids were
young – or at least not in their forties, as they (sigh) are now – I was pretty
consistent about feeding them. I never achieved that sort of reliability with
the plant population of the house.

Lillie McFerrin Writes
A half-dead fly
buzzed sporadically at the spit-ball-dotted window. The khaki shade was
at half mast and tapped in the frame with the early spring breeze, while the noon sun entered uninvited with each gust. One
row of desks remained in alignment, a stark contrast to the rest of the room
with its overturned chairs. Inside, silence, though a clock ticked and a
forgotten paper fluttered; outside, raucous voices called to one another, music blared, and a siren screamed.
The building was at last discarded, unwanted if
not unneeded; the inevitable result of theories, testing, and the rejection of
common sense.

Borrowed Spring
This weekend my friends and I decided to leave the
well-aged snow in our yards behind and go to the Boston Flower Show for an
injection of spring. The smell of fresh things blooming when we walked through
the doors was promising, but once we started down an aisle, the next thing we
knew, it was time to shop!

Wet Women
I’ve found a rare and wonderful place, a place other than my
closet where I don’t mind wearing a swim suit.

Treading the Boards
When I sign on to that giant blog
in the sky I will have few regrets. My life has surprised me with its variety
of milestones reached, even if they were basically unplanned. I was never one
of those people who at six and a half, knew that I was destined to be an
actuary, or, wait - maybe a cosmetologist - and then worked unceasingly towards
that one goal.

Clean As a Whistle
Ten
years zipped by when I wasn’t paying attention and it was that time again. We
all know about the importance of scheduled colonoscopies, thanks to many
celebrity endorsements and even live reporting from the scene.

Who Knew?
I was listening to
a song in the car the other day and thought how interesting it is that I grew
up listening to Ravi Shankar by way of the Beatles and today I’m enjoying the
music of his daughter, Nora Jones.
