House Games

At the risk of jinxing the whole deal, I can announce that we just signed off on the buyers’ offer for our house.
Judging by their previous behavior, we’ll now sit and wait for the other shoe to fall when we get to inspection time.

This is a couple who, after we re-posted our house at $15,000 less than when we’d first put it on the market, offered us $10,000 less than that. We of course said no, they came back with a number, we came back with a number. They said no.

We then caved and agreed to their last number.

They walked away, and according to a message from their realtor to our realtor, they accused us of “playing games.”

Are they at all familiar with the process of offers and counter offers?

Did they realize they had the price they wanted?

Two weeks later, they returned, ready to accept what we’d agreed to in the first place.

          Delightful people.

  1. It really is an awful process. You made massive upgrades to your house to make it market standard. As one inspector said to me, "If they want new construction, they should buy new construction." You'll get to the end, one step at a time. Happy new year.

  2. Sigh.
I hope the deal is done and the game playing (by them) is over.
Fingers and toes crossed (to match the eyes).

  4. Some people are annoying. Good you got the house sold. All the best to you in 2018.

  5. The little I know about offers and counter offers could fit on the head of a pin. I remember when a realtor over-priced our house and when it didn't sell, he lowered the price but forgot to add in that my much loved lace curtains were not included in the sale. So the house sold for even lower than what he'd priced it at AND I lost my favourite curtains that I'd paid a small fortune for.

  6. I hate the trauma of selling a home. It ends up being a non-control process. And we are selling not just bricks and mortar and wood...we are selling memories.

  7. uh, have they never bought a house before? did their realtor not tell them how house buying goes? you agreed to their number and they walked away? they are a little confused about who is playing games. at this point I'd tell them to take it or leave it regardless what the inspection reveals. but then it would be nice to start the new year without an old house.

    1. That's pretty much our attitude if they make any more waves.

  8. We once bought a house from a couple who were just evil, it was 30 years ago and I still remember how hateful they were.

  9. Well, thank goodness you have an offer and a contract. Here's hoping it all goes smoothly from here on out!
