Sea Change

Warning: Dangerously cold wind chills expected. Will cause frostbite in as little as 10 minutes to exposed skin. Expect wind chills to range from 10 below zero to 25 below zero.

This advice for our area back home from the Weather Channel today was familiar and made perfect sense. After all, today in Massachusetts the high is expected to be 10 degrees, and Saturday night the low is forecast at -15.

When we arrived here Tuesday on the West Coast of Florida, aside from the palm trees, the Weather Channel’s messages were more proof that we weren’t in the Bay State any longer. The app on my phone showed the red band across the top, with the weather alert I’ve seen at home.

I tapped it and learned that yes, indeed, there was a wind chill in effect. Lower temperatures were arriving, to the tune of 45 degrees (!), and the kind folks at the Weather Channel suggested that if Floridians were to venture forth into this, we might get cold if we failed to wear a hat and gloves.

  1. I do hope the old house closed, and I were where it is warmer.

  2. Well, I just learned that iguanas are freezing and falling out of the trees in Florida. They aren't necessarily dead, however, they just need to warm up. Never heard of that before. :-)

    1. I just saw that in yesterday 's paper! That would be a bit startling - to have an iguana clunk to the ground in front of you.

  3. I agree, 45 is cold. Here in Australia that would be 8C and we'd all be rugged up in many layers of fleecy goodness and staying inside by the heaters as much as possible.
After you've been in Florida for several years you might start to think of 45 as cold too.
