Retirement means
finally waking up when you feel like it – or in my case, when my cat decides I
should get up. It also means freedom to go where you want when you want.
So I’ve been delving into the world of day trips. They’re everywhere, offered by local libraries, AAA, senior centers, museums. Generally, the bus is filled with ladies over a certain age with an occasional husband thrown in for good measure.

This week my intrepid travel
buddy and I joined a group going up to New Hampshire’s Lake Winnipesaukee. This
was a pretty sprightly bunch, unlike the members of our last trip. That day our
bus bore a close resemblance to a triage unit, there were so many walkers and
oxygen tanks.
We boarded our boat for the tour of the lake and were soon on our way.
It was the only way to really appreciate what a beautiful lake it is, filled with tiny islands and surrounded by mountains.
We chose which house would be ours, waved to the boaters and imagined ourselves living on an island of our own.
Your photos are wonderful. Makes me want to go there for a visit.
ReplyDeleteI take no credit. The scenery was so gorgeous it was impossible to take a bad picture.
ReplyDeleteI went there many times during my years in Maine. Our friend's son even got married on the lake W. boat. Such a lovely spot. Great photos.
ReplyDeleteLucky you and lucky young couple. It's really beautiful there.
DeleteOld dears on a coach trip... what could be finer?
ReplyDeleteLet them laugh... the joys of ageing...
It comes to us all. Celebrate I say. We made it!

I couldn't agree more!
DeleteWow, what wonderful pictures! The aspens are finally starting to turn at our neck of the woods, but I would have loved to see it in person in New England!
ReplyDeleteGreetings from another retired teacher! I did enjoy the day trip - I often go for a "tootle" with hubby on our motorbike. Keeps us young don't you think?
ReplyDeleteAnd so delightful to be out in the world in the middle of a weekday. Two years earlier I would have instead been standing in front of 25 English students!
DeleteIts hard to decipher if the benefits of being older outweigh the issues. I know that for some things...being younger makes things a bit better. But at the same time I don't think I have reached an age yet where I have said to myself I wish I could just stop here because I really like the mind set of not caring as much what people think and worrying less about getting what's mine...if that makes sense. There is a relaxation that comes with age, at least with me. Getting to watch younger people strive and stride for the things I know aren't that important anymore has some satisfaction. I really like this writing and the thought process. You did a great job and I appreciate you coming out for this one.
ReplyDeleteThanks for such a thoughtful and thought-provoking comment.
