Break out the acorn squash

We’ve been driving around admiring the foliage, which is stunning in this New England state full of sugar maples. Yesterday morning Mamie practically sprinted back to the house after she’d done her business, so I rooted around in the closet till I found her parka. It’s a little early in the season for that, but I woke up this morning to 30 degrees and frost on the ground, so as they say in Westeros, “Winter is coming.”

The outside flowers will need to be pulled up soon; we’ll have
the mums in pots for color for the next month, although the pumpkins are already looking a little blotchy.  Today’s task was to bring in the hoses and turn off the water to the outside faucets. Frozen pipes are nothing to make light of.

  1. I remember frozen pipes only too well. Definitely not something to make light of. One dreadful winter in a rented home not only did they freeze but they shattered in the cold. NOT a fun time. And a recalcitrant landlord added to the joy.

  2. That nip certainly is in the air. Please, no sustained zero and less temps, and cupboard doors open and heat lamps heating....

  4. Frozen pipes is something I have never experienced. At the other end of the scale, in summer here we often get very warm water from our cold water taps.

  5. Our garage has been cleared enough to fit the car in. The hoses are still functional as the 7-day forecast didn't see frost although we' have had a light one or three already.

  6. Think the cat wants in:) We aren't that cold yet but I am actually looking forward to it.

  7. Such a cute picture of Mamie looking out the door. Is that a real cat on the doorstep? :-)

    1. Nope. It's a metal cut out that we've had for years. An homage to the many wonderful cats we've had.

  8. Your mums look much better than ours. We got loser mums this year.

    1. I scored big time this year on mums at a nursery. $5 each for ginormous plants.

    1. Not till end of December this year. We're actually enjoying being here for fall. Plus, I was annoyed at how hot it was for the entire month of October in Florida last year. And of course, it feels much safer to be here in Massachusetts rather than nutty Florida.
