Report from the pool

Jet lag is in the rear view mirror and I’m settling into my familiar routine, which means Monday morning at the Y. This was more critical than usual after ten days of croissants for breakfast, wine with lunch (another glass? why not?), and four course dinners with, of course, more wine. It’s hard to say which detoxing was more needed – from food or alcohol.

Water aerobics was especially beneficial today. Yeah, the range of motion and muscle strengthening and all that is fine, but the real pay-off was the networking.

1.     During the jumping jacks, upon learning that we’re heading soon to Florida (yes, I can’t believe it either) Renata recommended the Goodwill as a primo source of used furniture. With the, shall we say, turnover of residents there, it’s as good as any retail furniture store.

2.     We were into a round of high knee kicks when I was chatting with another lady who had just returned from a week in Boston and used Uber for the first time. Her son had the app on his phone and he called up an Uber driver who they paid $11 for a trip that would have cost $25. And even more incredibly, the driver knew where he was going, unlike her previous taxi encounters.

3.     Then I paddled over to Ruth, who looks like the last person in the world to need an exercise class. She was mid-way through a big Outlander discussion. I’ve been following the series on TV, but now I might take on the commitment of reading the seven volume series.

I call that a morning well spent.

  1. Made me smile to think of the networking going on under water. Or in water, whatever. :-)

    1. Our instructor has the patience of Job - we chatter as much as we exercise.

  2. I think I'll see if the library has them.

  3. I've heard that about Florida, too. And also that the curbs, after students leave college for the summer, offers good finds, too. I find that hard to believe; I have a daughter who helped recycle that furniture into terminal rattiness.

    1. I agree, Joanne. I would have been royally ticked off if our daughter had abandoned the dresser on the curb that I'd schlepped from one dorm room to another for her at Northeastern.

  4. Ooh, I wish we had that option in tiny town Arkansas. Sounds delightful.

  5. Just caught up with your posts, all the way back to the beginning of your trip and now back in the pool at the Y. I would love to go on a vacation just to eat someone else's cooking for a change. My sister now reads your blog and enjoys your post as much as I do. She also borrowed your book to read. Glad you are home.

    1. You've been busy enough with your back issues, which I'm so glad seem to be on the mend! And say hi to your sister for me.

  6. I highly recommend the Outlander series. I read the first book back in the early 1990s, and I was hooked immediately. I've been a devoted fan ever since. I think Diana Gabaldon is one of the best fiction writers I've ever read. She is a superb story teller. The Starz series is doing the books justice, and I can't say that about very many adaptations. The books are still better, but series on TV is quite good.

    1. Ruth (the lady at the pool) said when she finished reading the series, she was so sad at being done that she went back and read the first one all over again!

    2. I've read each only once, but I've listened to the unabridged audio CDs of each book several times. The longest is 40 CDs. A bit of a time commitment, but I listen as I am doing household chores, driving to my volunteer job, and going about my morning and evening ablutions. They are superb!

  7. You're moving to Florida or visiting? Wave as you pass through Georgia.

    1. Second home, and I'm about to explode from excitement!Never thought we'd do anything like this!
Our daughter was born at Ft. Benning, so I feel like a tiny bit of a Georgian.

  8. I've thought about a water aerobics class, I know I'd love it, but the nearest pool in any direction is two bus trips away, then two home again. There's one at a gym reasonably close, but you have to be a gym member and I'm not paying that enormous fee!

  9. As a former Floridian, I can confirm that the Goodwill (and other similar thrift stores) are well worth checking out -- though there's plenty of trash there as well as treasure!
