Trash Rebels

Ever since we moved to the commune condo complex seven years ago, My Guy has had his own war with our past trash company.

Theoretically, they came every Tuesday morning. In reality, they usually meandered through mid-afternoon. Nevertheless, just in case they whimsically decided to arrive in the morning, he would have the trash on the curb by 9:30 or 10:00 a.m.

And no, we’re not supposed to put trash out the night before.

This week we have a new waste management company, who notified residents that Friday was now pick-up day and all trash must be out by 8:00 a.m. This was a major body blow to My Guy, a late sleeper for whom dragging the bags out at 9:30 had verged on heroic.

Sure enough, there they were this morning, in front of our house, bright and early.

When he got up, I informed him that yes, indeed, they had kept their threat promise and were there at 8:15.

And he told me that before he went to bed last night (long after me at his usual midnight-ish) he’d deposited our bins at the end of the driveway.

Not only that, but when he was out there in the dark he realized that our sweet neighbor Carol had already beaten him to it with her trash -  and we suspect she’s quietly been doing this all along.

  1. We do put out our bins the night before - and thankfully there is no law/regulations against it. They usually do the pick up around nine but have from time to time whizzed through just after seven (catching a lot of people out).

  2. My guy goes to bed at about the same time as yours. I have been asleep for ages by that time, too. I wonder if night owls and early birds are naturally drawn to one another.

  3. Here the trash collection starts early so everyone puts their bins out the night before. Some councils here have recently decided to enforce some rules where bins are nt to be put out before 4pm the day before collection and must be brought back in by midnight the day of collection and their fine for not doing so is quite hefty. You do get a few warning notices before they fine you, but everyone thinks this is all unfair, since a bin takes up very little space on the footpath, yet councils routinely ignore abandoned cars that sit for months or years blocking traffic, also ignore mountainous piles of household goods that have been dumped on road verges.

  4. We're supposed to have everything out by 8 a.m. Friday morning, but sometimes the trash doesn't actually come until Saturday! It all depends on whether all their trucks are running, apparently.
