The rough road of romance

I was in the house and heard a noise somewhere between clicking and barking. A new dog in the neighborhood? Were our pipes in the basement doing strange things? I looked outside and saw:

After months of wandering aimlessly in back of our house, our three bachelor turkeys have snared themselves a harem! Except in spite of the impressive numbers, they obviously have no clue how to treat the ladies. One did make a half-hearted attempt to puff himself up into the turkey kabuki dance of love, but he never reached full plumage; it was gone almost before it began.

And as soon as they’d herded everyone into our backyard, land of hickory nuts and other good things, the skies opened up into a wall of rain, followed by some pretty impressive thunder and lightning. They really should have checked the weather forecast before taking their womenfolk out on the town.

At least they finally had the decency to march everyone off into the woods for shelter.

  1. Smiling. And hoping that the woods did offer shelter.

  5. Perhaps the turkeys are young and just beginning the thrills of romance, it might take some time to find their way.
