Playing Possum

We’re very happy, My Guy and I, with the landscaping here in our complex.

A large factor of our pride is that we have absolutely nothing to do with it other than sit on the porch, drink in hand, and watch it get done without us.

I’ve written before about the fried egg tree up the street. Its official name is all Latin-y and important sounding, but why would you use that when the street name is so much more fun?

This is what I’ve named the Possum Tree. I have no idea what it is, but it sits on the edge of our driveway looking like it’s only got about a week left to live. When we first moved here, we thought “Uh oh. They’ll be coming to rip that sucker out any day now.” But then spring rolled around and voila! Glorious and fat white blooms all over it.  It’s been playing dead again through most of the summer with bare branches and scaborous bark that looks like tree psoriasis.

Then it started doing this.

When I looked it up on my plant-naming app, Seek, it was identified as being in the apple family, but with only 7 blooms on the whole of its twiggy skeleton, it had better hurry up if it’s going to crank out any fall apples.

  1. I agree with EC. Not playing possum, it is possum.

  2. A bit of serious pruning may make the tree get busy producing apples.

  3. I don't think I'd be waiting for them apples. I am glad that even if it's ugly, it's still producing.

  4. I'm not an expert on apples, but it seems pretty weird for a tree to look like that in the summer (or early fall). Like River said, I wonder if it just needs a good prune.

    1. It’s likely an apple relative, and a non-producing decorative flowering tree, like the flowering plums we see in the spring.
