Busy

Never mind the last post - now that we’ve settled in, life has speeded up a little and feels a bit less aimless than in Florida, where life is simpler and household tasks are no more taxing than taking out the trash or driving through the car wash.

Even though here up north we downsized out of our house of 20 years to a condo, this is our primary residence and there are still things that need doing. The good news is that now some of it is done by other people.

The railing next to the back porch stairs was a bit wobbly so I called our management company, and as it turned out, the complex handyman was right on site and at our place in an hour to check things out. He was back yesterday, replacing a rotten post and tightening up the wobble. Anything outside is in their hands, so I had also reported that the porch stairs were flaking and down to the bare wood in some spots. I’d thought about doing it myself – there are worse jobs than sitting in the sun with a small painting project – but that burst of ambition burned out quickly, so he painted the stairs while he was here.

Still, there is plenty to do. The porch is now scrubbed and the furniture moved back in, the garden needs to be weeded and I hope to get some seeds in the ground soon, and the pots are organized and waiting for the threat of frost to pass. And then there’s the constant struggle of holding the line against the deer and rabbits, so I’m out every other day spraying my hosta with a product so noxious I can’t open the windows afterwards. The tulips are a lost cause.

I’m still a master at putting off the vacuuming, and the windows aren’t really all that dirty, are they?

  1. We have the deer, the javelinas, and the rabbits. I have zero plants that are fluffy and pretty, only plants with spikes that have self defense. I miss blooming plants. The deer have consumed the bottom half of two orange trees. Jim is spraying the with something that smells like fermented hotdogs. It's just vile. Good luck with your planting!

  2. We have a community garden, but also a deer fence that keeps them out. Although it looks like they could jump it, a wire going around it up high keeps them from trying. Cute bunny, BTW!

  3. I am a master at deferring the dusting. Sadly I KNOW that the windows are that dirty - and I continue to put it off. Gardening is much more fun (despite being rather hard work at the minute).

  4. It takes a woman to spot dirty windows. At least it does in our house.

    1. Summer feels impossibly far away sometimes.

  6. I can't clean my windows at all now since they put the security screens over them, not that I ever did clean them. I figure if I can't see out, peeping toms and burglars can't see in, right?

  7. I usually wonder who we're cleaning for? If we don't mind, let whoever minds attend to it!
