Bad Girl!

All dressed up and ready to ride.

So there we were, Mamie and I, on our way to her favorite park. I, of course, had on my seat belt, and she was clipped to the safety strap on her travel seat by her harness. The seat is a big cube of foam, covered in dog-proof fabric, and is anchored by the car seat belt. It sits over a foot high so height-challenged dogs can enjoy the view, too, with an edge around it to keep them from tumbling out. Or so you would think.

In the past, Mamie has sat and slept quietly back there, even on the looong ride from Massachusetts to Florida. It looks like things are about to change.

I must have stopped more suddenly than I thought, because when I looked back, Mamie was half-suspended out of her bed. I managed to reach back with my right arm and scoop her over to the back seat, and then unclip her. In spite of all my urgings, she showed no interest in jumping back up onto her bed, and sat there on the back seat like taxi customer waiting for her destination.

We got to the park, had a nice walk, and then back to the car for the ride home. I clipped her into her travel seat and took off. In under two minutes, she had jumped out of her bed and was now smiling at me from the back seat.

Who was the wise guy who said old dogs can’t learn new tricks?

  1. I think that the phrase is that you can't TEACH an old dog new tricks. They learn what they want to - and sometimes it isn't what you want.
She is a total cutie. Which you (and she) know.

  2. She evidently isn't buying into this and I think just taught you a new trick. She is just so darn cute.

  3. The thing about pets and children is that they never lose the capacity to surprise you. Just when you think you're all set..
