Wiley Dining

If you plan to eat out in January here, you’ve gotta have a strategy.

The other night we met another couple for dinner at a popular restaurant and scored a patio table that looked right down on the Intercoastal Waterway.

Quite an achievement at the height of Florida’s snowbird season. And achieved only because we were willing to sit down at five o’clock, rather than a more fashionable dining hour. The couple we were with had eaten out the night before at 4:30 in the afternoon. If, like us, you aren’t someone who can sit at the bar (assuming there’s even room) swilling drinks for an hour until a table frees up, this is the best way to go.

We’re also going a bit native. Yesterday we walked to the very handy Moose club that sits at the end of our street. Having heard about the incredible drink and food deals, we joined up last year.

Here’s Wednesday’s lunch: Overstuffed seafood salad sandwich (delectable), open-faced hot roast beef sandwich and two sodas. Price? $13.00

Today’s lunch, although not exactly health food, at Costco had that beat:

  1. Eating out and getting a small bill is the goal of us oldies who have no other fancy places in our lives.

  2. Wednesday's lunch looks like excellent value. The Costco one's price was good, but the food and beverage didn't tempt.

  3. I'd like to know a little more about that handy Moose Club, does it have a name I can google for information?

    1. It's actually the Loyal Order of the Moose, a fraternal service organization, probably similar to the Elks or the Shriners. You need to know a member and be invited. A nice group of people.

  4. I just returned from my Florida vacation. We ate out once, at noon, at Panera Bread. My sister doesn't even try to go to any other restaurant at this time of the year. :-)

  5. I'd have to wonder what part of the cow they used for that all beef 1/4+ pound of hot dog for $1.50.

  6. I've heard about this phenomenon, but 5 would pretty well always be fine with me.
