Banjoes, Bugs, and Bubbles

eHarmony, and other online dating services seem to be doing their job. We’ve known several couples, at least two of them in their 60s, who are together today because of them. Our nephew is the latest in the list.

After a long quiet spell, our family is in the middle of a series
of major events; this weekend was a wedding. It was our second outdoor wedding this summer, and again we dodged the rain that had been forecasted. The ceremony was held at a large park named after Frank Stanley Beveridge, king of the Stanley door-to-door cleaning products.

Our nephew is an outdoorsman – fishing in the summer, hunting in the fall, snowmobiling in the winter – so it was a perfect venue. The bridesmaids wore cowboy boots, carried sunflowers in their bouquets, and walked in to soft banjo music.

The ceremony was brief, something of a blessing since even though we had the backdrop of a huge fountain, spraying cooling water five feet into the air, the summer sun was blazing down with a vengeance.

Still, there was laughter over stories of the courtship, a machine that spewed bubbles everywhere but where it was supposed to, and a magnificent bug that planted itself on the backside of the groom.

We watched, fascinated, wondering if it was of the stinging variety, and whether one of us should intercede before we found out.

In the end, vows were exchanged, rain was averted, and we headed off for dancing and cake.

  1. Looks like a biting horse fly to me!! But at last he was well covered.

  2. I love weddings! This one looks like it was perfect, other than the horsefly. I guess it just wanted to get in the spirit of things. Congratulations to the couple in their newly minted marriage! :-)

  3. Nevertheless, a perfect wedding, especially when it was through.
I remember Stanley. My mother bought from the salesman. I believe she even bought my father's socks from them.

  4. I think I would have swatted that fly.
I never tried online dating, but I dated a few guys through the "Chicago Reader." A disaster.

  5. It looks like a lovely day. And I am glad that the bug also survived.

  7. It would have been hard to concentrate on the wedding while wondering about that fly. Loved the banjos for music.
I have known several people that have found a life mate through the dating sites.

  8. Weddings are wonderful, but adding a bubble machine makes it magical.

  9. Such are the risks of outdoor weddings! But it looks like all turned out well, fortunately. (Does he have a bouquet of sunflowers in his pocket?)

Dave and I are together because of chemistry.com, so I can relate!

  10. I know a few people who are with people they met on those dating sites. my sister tried it but mostly what she got were men who just wanted sex and men who didn't want to drive 30 minutes for a date.
