Double Defense

I rarely comment on events in the news, but sometimes you just have to share a thought to be free of it.

I’ve been driving around in my car running errands the past few days and can’t seem to escape the news of the latest White House appointment. I switch channels, and there it is again, along with the mental images that inevitably pop into my mind.

President Obama has named yet another new Secretary of Defense. I really wish things had worked out better for the past one because I keep getting distracted by the name of the new candidate, Ashton Carter.

Come one, people. Don’t tell me that you haven’t noticed the similarity in initials between the projected head of the Pentagon and the star of Two and a Half Men.

Ashton Kutcher vs Ashton Carter. Really – which of the two do you think would bring a beefcakey whimsy to all those conflicts cropping up here and there?

I’ve been unable to follow serious discussions of Mr. Carter’s suitability for the job because I keep visualizing Mr. Kutcher overseeing the Joint Chiefs of Staff in his trademark unzipped hoodie and tousled hair.

Meanwhile, to record this touch of the upcoming season, I had to turn around for a quick photograph today:

  2. I have been avoiding the news. Somehow there isn't much good news out there. The DoD needs a strong leader...never heard of that guy before he must have an in:)

  3. Well, I know next to nothing about this new appointment except it is acceptable to both sides, which means to me he is gray. Love the traffic sign.

  4. Hey, I like what happened to the deer crossing sign. Somebody has a wicked sense of humor.

  5. We have the same sign. I blogged about it too. Ashton sounds like a young name to me...

    1. I had a suspicion there were other people out there who had a red reflector button and a big yellow sign and saw the serendipity of it.
