Splurging

I figured one last indulgence before we leave would be a shopping trip. Florida clothes are different, and with all their bejeweling and glitter not the sort of thing that a Northerner like me would usually wear. Except for the fabrics. At home the tee shirts are heavier, thicker, and when Massachusetts hits the 90s, as it often does, it would be good to have something to cover as much of me as possible without buckling under the heat.

So off I went to the very exclusive local shop of Fifi’s. With a name like that, it could be one of those stores where I worry if my own outfit is swanky enough to even enter, but that’s not the case here.

Fifi’s is a consignment shop, so everything in there was picked out for me by someone else – possibly several years ago.

There’s also the bonus that I don’t have to worry about anything shrinking in the wash, since it’s likely been laundered many times before I ever saw it. And if the date on the tag says it’s been there for more than a month, it’s half off the consignment price. Perfect.

However, the ladies who bring things in for resale lean heavily toward loud prints touched with lots of gold accents, so that narrows the field for me, but I did find a semi-fancy sort of tee plus an all-cotton golf shirt (hard to track down in this age of “wicking” sports fabrics).

Less than $14 each. Excellent.

On my way to the register, I couldn’t help but stop by the designer rack, drawn there
by a very showy jacket, so heavy with beading and decoration that it must be incredibly heavy – and hot.

How much would such a thing cost, I wondered? I checked the price tag. $200!!

But how much was it originally?

I can't imagine a universe where I would spend as much for an item of clothing as a piece of furniture.

  1. That universe is alien to me too. I do like the idea of a consignment store though. I wonder whether we have them?

    1. Many towns do. The trick is to live near a city where rich ladies grow tired if their clothes. When I lived in Virginia, outside of Washington D.C my stepmother knew of a shop where the ambassadors’ wives would bring their cocktail dresses.

  2. That's way too much money for something that can't be worn often.

    1. At that price I’d be wearing it to the grocery store.

  3. And it's not only pricey, but I bet it's really heavy, too.
