Tax Discount

Yes, amazing but true. Here in our town, you can receive a discount on your property taxes.

Maybe this is common practice in other places and I’ve just been oblivious, but I’m still impressed by our program in which a few positions are offered to seniors for tax abatement. 17 Senior citizens will be selected to work for the town for fiscal year 2023 (From July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023). Minus federal income tax and Medicare deductions, after 125 hours, the maximum abatement is $1,500.

          The available positions are:

          Library helpers

          Public Access Television Producers

Assistants in the Selectmen’s office, Senior Center, Clerk’s Office, and Treasurer’s Office

I would think this would be not only a little financial relief, but also helps some people get out of the house and participate in their town.

  1. Sounds like a temp job to me. They could probably earn more in part time work of their choosing and apply the income to their taxes. The state I live in has a Senior tax freeze in place where you are refunded each year any real estate taxes above the baseline year in which you first entered the program. It's income based, but the ceiling is three times the average income.

  2. Truly a temp job, since it's only for a year. One benefit is that the town adjust the hours to each person, rather than the person having to adjust their own life for a low-paying job.
Sounds like your state is senior-friendly.

    1. Not so much friendly as aware that seniors are a passionate voting bloc, and long since stopped worrying about being approved by politicians!

  4. We don't have anything like that here. Would be nice. We do have a service but you do have to apply for it. Once you hit 65, they can never raise your property assessment. I'll take it.

  5. I sure do miss Calvin and Hobbes. I am a lifelong renter, so there's no property tax that I need to pay. Just huge rental increases. :-(

  7. I don't think that happens here in Australia. It seems like a good system though.

  9. What an interesting idea. Any way to help and still provide dignity.
