Having grown up in an environment so WASPy that I could sign up with the Daughters of the American Revolution if I had a mind to, I didn’t receive the formative lessons on guilt that, according to the stand-up comedians, good Catholic and Jewish mothers hand out.
Oh sure, I have a twinge every time I throw out the perfectly good heels of a loaf of bread; if I were a better person, I’d whip out my blender and turn those suckers into bread crumbs. But I still unapologetically discard the remaining milk at the end of a bowl of raisin bran without a single thought for all those unfortunate people who would give their left big toe for it.
However, today I came across a bit of a poser.
Our exercise class instructor told us her granddaughter (she’s an annoyingly fit grandmother) should have been in YMCA summer camp today. Camp was cancelled though, because one of the kids contracted Covid.
A brief discussion arose (necessarily brief since we were heaving weights around at the time) about children under 12 not receiving the vaccine. Our instructor said she’d learned of one set of parents who’d actually lied about their 11 year-old’s age in order to get the child vaccinated. Someone asked what kind of message this was sending to the child.
Opinions? Would you do this?
Addendum: That was a bad title. Because who in fact were those parents harming? If anything, their actions furthered the protection of the community.

ReplyDeleteFor sure. My daughter actually did, to have the 15 y/0 vaccinated, back when 16 was the cut off.
ReplyDeleteMaybe. It depends on if we were living in an area where a child catching the virus was likely, then yes. If not, then I wouldn't, but I would try to keep them home as much as possible, away from areas where the virus was/is. I would get them vaccinated the minute they were old enough. Thankfully mine are all in their 40s and making their own decisions.
ReplyDeleteProbably not. But we couldn't here as the authorities would know. The health info would be computerized. BTW, I think our 12 and 14 years olds will get their 2nd shots today.

DeleteI'm surprised lying would work. Don't they require some proof of age? The only thing that would give me pause is that the vaccinations, as I understand it, haven't been thoroughly tested in younger kids. At least not to the satisfaction of the health authorities. Which is why they're still not recommending vaccinations for those age groups. Am I wrong about this?
ReplyDeleteNot sure what documentation is required. I certainly wouldn't vaccinate a four year-old, but I might be tempted to bend the rules for an 11 1/2 year-old.
DeleteI do hope everyone will be able to get vaccinated very soon. Those who don't want the jab should always be obliged to wear masks all the time, IMO.
