Just when you despair of ever having anything to write about, something falls from the sky. Or in this case, slithers from the grass.
I took Mamie out for her morning constitutional, and was fiddling around with the reception on my phone when I looked up just in time. As usual, I was in the lead with Mamie meandering along behind me. I jumped, Mamie jumped, and we took a different route. I’ve usually seen black snakes here, sunning themselves on the sidewalk when the weather warms up.
Not sure what kind this one was.
I’m less enthusiastic about following her into the tall grass.
Think it might be a baby corn snake? If you find out, please let us know.
ReplyDeleteStay tuned. Hopefully there a knowledgeable reader out there who will tell us.
DeleteCuriosity got to me. I think it's a Nerodia taxispilota, aka brown water snake. Not venomous, but could give a nasty bite if cornered. Why it decided to hang out on my sidewalk is beyond me.
DeleteI don't do snakes well.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a python of some description to me - but what would I know.
Years back a red-bellied black snake lived under our front steps. For about nine months of the year I only used the back door.
I'm not afraid of snakes but I do avoid them when I see them, usually by standing still until they have moved on.
ReplyDeleteI don't care for snakes, either.
ReplyDeleteNo scary snakes here, just regular little old garter snakes (and I see fewer and fewer of those). It was probably as scared of you, as you were of it! -Jenn
ReplyDeleteI think it's a corn snake, but it's hard to tell. Could be a water snake. In any case, I don't think it's dangerous. Don't kill it! :)
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, no. We need it to hold off any potential rats, which I've never seen but they're not putting those traps around the building for decoration. And rats creep me out way more than snakes.
DeleteIt looked rather harmless to me, but what do I know? Best to steer clear. :-)
