Frying Pan to Fire

Last week we traveled from Massachusetts, with its total of 349,602 Covid cases to Florida, with 1,264,588 cases. We also left our sensible Governor Charlie Baker for carefree Ron DeSantis, (who at one point thought it would be a swell idea for everyone to skip the second virus inoculation so that more people could get vaccinated).   But basically, we’ve just sequestered behind a different set of walls, outside of trips to the grocery store. Plus, warm weather. Weather that doesn't require 15 layers for a 2 minute potty trip with the dog.

This was our first year ever not opening Christmas gifts with our kids and grandkids, and while the day was pretty darn dull in comparison, phone calls and Zoom sessions softened the disappointment, the cooking load was much lighter, and I might be able to avoid the annual extra five holiday pounds.

We were less jumpy getting here as opposed to our trek from Florida in the spring, when we actually saw roadblocks at the Florida border and every bathroom felt like a teeming pit of germs. Mask wearing and hand-sanitizing at rest stops have become second nature, and we always eat take-out in the room anyway, stuck as we are toting a dog along. While on the road, as we were settling in for the night at our hotel, it occurred to me that there’d been another change because of Covid. I was so busy Lysol spraying the tv remote and heater vent and wiping down door knobs that I’d forgotten to check the edge of the mattress the way I’ve always done in the past.

I imagine, though, that at this point a case of bedbugs would feel like an anti-climax.

  1. I do hope you will not come back with either bedbugs or Covid. It sounds like you should be just fine! It's been a very different holiday for us all, that's for sure. :-)

  2. I don't comment on your blog often, though I often read....I'd suggest you look at what the actual vectors of transmission of this virus are, in all it's mutations: respiratory. Disinfecting surfaces, in your home, in stores, etc actually do little. It's transmitted when you are walking around in the store/hours/mall etc, and breathing the air exhaled by someone who has the virus, and often they, if they are younger (<40) have no idea they have the virus. Travelling like you did is exactly the opposite of what we need to do to get a handle on this disease. I appreciate you wanted to see your kids/relatives, etc. So do I.

    1. No mall walking going on for us. We're having no more contact with anyone here than up north. We packed our own food for the trip and only left the car for potty stops and gas. I agree that the aerosols are what we need to watch out for - but what the heck, I've always wiped down the remote and doorknobs in hotel rooms anyway. And yes, haven't seen my grandsons and their family in over a year now. :(

  3. Oh dear! Bite your tongue, Marty. Anti-climax or no, you don't want bedbugs!
    Happy new year to you.

  5. Stay safe. Governor deSantis has even hit the news here - though I hadn't heard his bright idea about making the vaccine go further before. Big, big sigh.
I wonder whether bedbugs can get and transmit Covid 19 - which is a thought you probably don't want to hear. Sorry.

    1. Bedbugs with Covid! Now there's a horror movie waiting to be filmed.

  6. I would think the hotel owners/managers would make sure each room is disinfected before allowing new people in, but it's good to take extra care as you are, just in case.

    1. We ask for a room no one stayed in the night before.

  7. You have moved into the Covid petri dish. Most of my family lives in Florida and I do worry about them. Didn't know about DeSantis's idea about making the vaccine go farther by reducing dosages. Yikes. Do take care and enjoy being outdoors.
