We have
company coming for dinner tonight, so of course I woke up this morning
to an ominous hum from the kitchen fridge not unlike the idle of a ’65 Pontiac
GTO.
And of
course it’s Sunday, even if we could bring ourselves to pay for another $89
visit (and probably time and a half for a weekend).
Could I skate
by without doing anything? Or tonight would our guests be using hand signals for
the rolls? I’d just bombed out yesterday with my two $1 scratch tickets from
the grocery store, so the odds didn’t look to be swinging in my favor.
Giant pot pie
(made yesterday, thank GOD) to the downstairs fridge. (And yes, thank god the
previous owners left us two fridges, even if one has all the quirky charm of
Carrie). Ketchup and various other condiments who can get by on their own –
stay in the fridge. Milk, butter, cold cuts, etc., and most importantly, the
tonic for tonight’s G & T’s into the cooler. Sauvignon blanc to basement
fridge.
Naturally
with our model it’s impossible to turn off the fridge with a simple button, so
down to the basement again find the right circuit breaker. (No, we were not
interested in wrestling 350 pounds of appliance out from its niche to unplug
it. )
Then, time
for the one tool that no home should be without, a hair dryer. Five minutes of
hot air blown into the area where we’d seen the repairman remove a cover and
chip off ice, turn the power back on, and we are good to go. I hope.
Bottom line,
there will be no more discussions of dinner parties near the appliances.
What a great post! Sorry about the appliance dance you had to do. A second fridge is such a bonus, isn't it? -Jenn
ReplyDeleteHahaha! So glad to know you observed the pricey fix and duplicated it free of charge. Good luck with that dinner party. It sounds like it will be fun. :-)
ReplyDeleteFingers and toes crossed that your fix works. We have only the one fridge, and for much of the year would be lost without it.
ReplyDeleteThat is so amazing — we had the same problem/noise yesterday. Googled it and fixed it today with the same tool — my hairdryer! Here’s a high five .🖐
ReplyDeletePS Google research revealed it’s the most common problem there is with GE refrigerators and has been happening for years. Probably keeping repairpersons’ families in groceries forever.
Ours is a Samsung, but this looks like a problem that spans the brands.
DeleteBTY, fixed the car years ago with a judicious application of hairdryer to the motor!
I think you'll have a good time, especially in the muffling of Alexa.
ReplyDeleteI love the alarmed look on that fridge. :) :)
ReplyDeleteOh to have a second refridgerator. Lucky you and what a life saver. Good thinking with the hair dryer. Hope it holds.
