I’ve been spending the past few days selectively deaf. My AirPods have become almost a permanent fixture in my head, and My Guy is getting used to waiting for me to tap my left ear twice (to pause the recording) until he can speak to me. There are a couple of reasons for this.
Firstly, I LOVE the book that I’m listening to. I’ve discovered a series of British police mysteries by Peter Grainger and have already gobbled up eight of them. They center around DC Smith, a self-described “old school” police detective who serves as a mentor to the young officers who work with him and as a thorn in the side of some of his officious superiors. (And it just occurred to me today that he reminds me of the main character in Britbox’s Touch of Frost, a series I highly recommend)
Also, a large part of my enjoyment of
this series is the narrator, Gildart Jackson.
The second reason why I’m listening to
this latest book while cooking, walking, doing laundry, and every other
opportunity (short of vacuuming and taking a shower) is that I’ve got to get it
done, and soon.
I’ve learned that almost immediately
upon my return to Massachusetts in May, my book club will be discussing a Louise
Penney book. I’ve tried to get it onto my Ipad, but my lovely free library
service won’t have it available to borrow for weeks. So, I downloaded the audio
version, which I need to knock out before my loan is taken away in 14 days. Thus
my rush through the current book so I can launch into the next one.
Considering how many Armand Gamache
books I’ve already read, though, chances are high that I may have already read
it, but at least now it will be a bit fresher in my memory.
Happy reading. I have not yet succumbed to audio books.
ReplyDeleteA great way to enliven mundane tasks and they’re free through my library. I’m usually listening to one book and reading another.
DeleteI listen to podcasts when I am walking, but only when there is no traffic around me. My failing eyesight makes it difficult to see properly. I a run-in with a car, I would be the loser.
ReplyDeleteAnd I never listen to books when I'm driving. I've been known to miss vital exits.
