Soldiering on

(Not his - example from the show)

While My Guy has been painting in oils over the past several years (and we're running out of space on the walls) it all started with another medium.

He was off at a hobby show this weekend – officially, the 50th gathering of the Atlanta Military Figures Society – and I was bacheloretting it at home.

He drove from here in Venice to a friend who’d recently moved to the Ocala area. They then drove up to Atlanta for three madcap days of tiny works of art, male bonding, and dinners that would make a cardiologist faint.

It all began for him long ago, with painting and sculpting military figures, most no taller than 5 inches, coupled with the extensive research necessary to get the uniforms and accoutrements accurate. But over the many years he’s been doing this it’s morphed into completely different subject areas.

Witness his entries at the show this year:

The following two are a format called "flats," which are basically bas reliefs of pewter which he then paints and either mounts or frames.

And the trip paid off - he came home with a silver medal for the macaw.
