Noon Thrills

Yesterday, while taking Mamie out for a noon stroll, I heard a BOOM!. We have roofers here in the complex, but this was too loud for anything they might be doing. A felled tree? This didn’t have that reverberation you often hear, and again, it was too loud. But there was only the one, and the skies were bluebird blue.

Turns out it was the fireball of a disintegrating meteor landing in western New York state, almost 300 miles away. It was seen from Ontario to Virginia, with reports of sightings from seven different states.

My biggest concern at the time? That it might be thunder, which would have meant a shaking dog for the rest of the afternoon.

  1. It amazes me that the sound could travel so far!

  2. Wow - for the sound to travel that far it must have been LOUD closer to the event.
It didn't bother Mamie? I am surprised.

    1. Nope. She just went right on sniffing a nearby bush like it was fine wine.

  5. That is so cool! 2020 is not complete without having a meteor shatter above your head, or a few miles away, BOOM. Thunder rumbles and is unpredictable I understand Mamie's terror!

  6. This must be the one that I've read about somewhere. In fact, I saw a clip of the sudden flash.

  7. Wow. How often do those fireballs land on earth instead of just whizzing by, I wonder?

  8. If you heard it from far away, imagine the power of that explosion!! So glad it did not hit earth with a big bang.

  9. Wow! I hadn't heard about that! Did it actually hit the ground or was it more of a sonic boom? I'll have to look it up!

    1. I think it burnt up in the atmosphere over a lake in New York.
