The first flush of arrival.

It's a truth universally acknowledged that travel expands our knowledge of the world and the people who share our planet. We gaze up at awe-inspiring cathedrals and admire heroic sculptures, but at the end of the day it's the homely elements of another nation's life that can feel the most foreign.

Hence the WC, aka the water closet.
Our hotel in Strasburg was a testament to why Europe has it all over us In terms of design.  By comparison, the United States has barely emerged from the outhouse.
I'd just like to ask - why don't we all have heated towel racks?

Wouldn't  a separate little stall for the commode improve life as we know it?

And at long last I understand those annoying women on the Home and Garden channel who reject an entire house based on the fact that it doesn't offer double sinks.

  1. I would like double sinks - but I would also like someone else to clean the bathroom for me.
And yes, those facilities look delightful, but I have some horror images burned into my synapses from trips away...

  2. Heated towel racks are great if we can afford the energy output. I have a heated floor in my bathroom and I just dump towels, PS whatever on the floor and then use it warm! I should have taken photos of the bathrooms in Indonesia in the smaller villages...those were eye openers.

  3. Oooh, heated towels seems like the lap of luxury to me. Nice looking WC! :-)

  4. Hotels have heated towel racks because the cost of running them is factored into the cost of staying there. Probably not all hotels have them. You can have them in your own home, just be prepared for your electricity bill to rise. Here in Australia it is becoming more common for bathrooms to have double sinks, especially if it is the ensuite to the master bedroom. It's a nice idea, but I don't see the need unless you and your husband like to stand side by side and brush your teeth together.

  5. Now if they could only do something about their toilet paper.

  6. I agree -- generally speaking, I think Europe has the advantage when it comes to designing bathrooms! (Sadly, this is not true of the bathroom in the house where I live.)

  7. Heated towels would be nice. Sometimes in winter, I throw the towel and clothes I will be wearing into the dryer while I am showering. They get toasty warm. Ahhh.

  8. Heated towel racks sound good. You always have a line thrown in that makes me laugh. This time it is that the US has barely emerged from the outhouse.
