Channeling Sisyphus

All we needed for true realization that our Florida days have ended was a glance out of the window. If we ever had grass in our yard, you'd never know it, thanks to the six-inch layer of leaves out there.

Today we played beat the clock – or, more accurately, the rain. With a forecast of showers by noon and a yard untouched by a rake since fall began, we were on a mission.

One year, when My Guy was laid up with a broken leg, I attempted to make a dent on my own but we ended up hiring a landscape crew. It was magical. They descended on our yard with blowers galore and struck with surgical precision. Not one leaf remained entwined in a bush, and all acorns disappeared as though they had never fallen. It was all achieved in one afternoon.

Today we worked on the “Well, it’s better than it was” premise.

Mamie was useful as a depth gauge for a while

But soon decided she’d rather serve as a supervisor.

With several yardfuls still in the trees there wasn’t much point in perfection; it’s only a matter of days before we start all over again.

  1. Our road guys just obtained a pull behind leaf blower that shoots all the leaves out of the ditches and back up in the woods. They also run a leaf vacuum that gets the leaves residents get to the edge of the road. Folks are hoping they'll remember which piece of equipment they are using.

  2. Good grief! That could be our yard. Nothing but the driveway has been raked here. It is useless. Mamie is adorable and looks like she is feeling right at home.

  3. How can one tree have so many leaves? That's what I ask myself when I'm raking.

  4. Some jobs never end. And the noise of blowers sends me to distraction...
    Good luck.
    Love your supervisor.

  5. Mamie is precious. We are buried in leaves but thankfully they're not our problem. The leaf blowing guys blow them into piles and a truck with a huge vacuum on it sucks them up. Just have to put up with the noise.

    1. Yes, one of these days we'll shelve all this DIYing. For now, I just think of it as a substitute for a trip to the gym.

  6. Why not just run the mower over them until they are fine-cut, then let them rot down under the winter snow and feed next season's grass?

  7. New approaches suggest that you run the mower over the leaves and chop them and then leave them on the lawn until spring to feed the grass!

    1. We've managed that toward the end of all this, but our trees are many and prolific and it's more than our mower and yard can handle.

    1. We do a little raking, but the majority of it is airlifted to the woods by our three blowers.

  10. Wow, that is a HUGE amount of leaves. I think if I were facing that, I'd put landscaping crew on my Christmas, Birthday, Mother's day--how ever many it took-- wish list
