Battening Down the Hatches

A year ago, it seemed like a great idea to give my husband a weather station. Now I’m not so sure.
This was the news from our yard this morning:

Note the temperature, bottom left.           ->
Yes, that's a negative twelve.

It wasn’t a huge surprise. We’ve been following the forecast with a morbid fascination.

We live at the end of a dead-end street, with woods on one side, a sloping acre and a half in back, and pine trees on the third side.  A peeping Tom would have to be seriously motivated (not to mention troubled.  Anyone who peers in the windows of an over-60 household has issues I’d rather not think about). Consequently, our curtains are rarely drawn, our shades infrequently lowered.

In the interest of warding off whatever cold I could, when we turned in last night, all those window coverings earned their keep.

This morning I realized that my plants will just have to survive on sunshine memories. The whoosh of frigid air when I opened the blinds told me that for a while at least, we’d be living like Bonnie and Clyde surrounded by G-men.

If any of the rest of you also need to ward off cabin fever and/or are unable to venture out due to those unfortunate vampire genes running through the family tree, here's my game plan for the day:

And of course,

  1. Minus ten when I looked out the kitchen window at the thermometer that's hung there almost thirty years. It was eight in the morning then; I have no idea how damn cold it was overnight. All window coverings are drawn against the cold air that rolls off and the sun cannot overcome.

  2. We have a weather station too, but it only said 32º this morning, but we live on the coast of Georgia, it shouldn't be this cold.

  5. Your plans for the day look pretty good to me too - though our temperatures are very, very different.
    Enjoy it.
And my partner would LOVE a posh weather station like that. I may have to investigate.

  8. Now that looks like a perfect day only because you threw the pie in. It was -26C when I awoke; now it is -8. So, this tough Canadian will not complain. But, I do want Spring early this year. I have no patience with winter anymore. btw - my husband is a weather-man wannabe. Hetells me numerous times throughout the day what the temps. are. lol
