We seem to be entering a new phase.
Last week the grocery store had lobsters on sale. After discussion with My Guy, we decided to go crazy. I called up to order two to be steamed and ready for pick-up. Except at the last minute I had a “what the hell” moment and asked for the poundage above the chicken lobsters.
I blanched a little over the price at
the checkout counter, but it would still be cheaper than a dinner out in a
restaurant. (never mind the fact that I’m done wrestling with my meal in
a public setting) And yes, thought I’d never say it, but it was almost too much
lobster. So there ya go – neither of us is interested in lobster anytime in the
near future. Money saved!
All those years feeding a family of
four with my trusty grocery clicker. Stopping when it hit $100, recalibrating
meals, putting off purchases, putting things back on shelves.
Real butter, exotic splurges like avocadoes, pricey roasts or
fresh orange juice were all unheard of. In today's world, I still refuse to pay $1.50 for one
avocado, but last week I reached right past the house brand of dish detergent
and for the first time in my life –
I
bought Dawn.
Aren't you the wild woman, going for the Dawn! I am a Diet Pepsi woman, but I used to buy whatever diet soda was on sale. Several years ago I decided I was done with that. Now I always have my beloved Diet Pepsi. I am old, and I have earned it.

DeleteI rarely buy house brand dish detergent, it does the job, but other brands do it better and with a smaller amount being used so each bottle lasts much longer.

ReplyDeleteIt's funny how shopping habits change once the family leaves home. Old habits take a long time to die, though.
ReplyDeleteChicken lobsters? I remember keeping a running tally when grocery shopping when the kids were growing up. Just two of us now but even so I won't buy some things like queen anne cherries which I love but I'm not paying over $10 for a small bag.
ReplyDeleteI do splurge on cherries, although I never did in the past. But even though they're one of my favorite things on earth, I still won't pay $10 for a small bag.
DeleteThe "poundage above the chicken lobsters"? Like, lobsters that weigh more than a chicken, I guess? Anyway it sounds like a fun splurge and it's just as well you don't want them again right away anyway -- since that's what makes splurges special!
