Squats of Joy

We’ve acquired a 6 year old dog with unconventional bathroom habits.
While she’s never had an accident over the past two weeks, we still don’t have a firm grip on this whole elimination thing.

Mamie came from a house with 3 other adorably cute dogs just like her, and which also had occasional waves of puppies since her past owner was a breeder. The owner is also a full time teacher and so Mamie was trained more for pee pad use than shuffling through the grass every morning.

This is pretty convenient, but still I can’t get too enthusiastic about having a big white pad in various spots of the house. So every morning instead of lolling in bed, I jump up and walk her around the yard and up to get the paper in the hope that she’ll switch to the other team.

Last night My Guy took her to the center of town after dinner. We hoped this would serve two purposes. First, to build the connection between the two of them since right now I am Queen of the Universe and All Worlds Beyond, which means whining and unhappiness when I’m away. And second, to continue our campaign of plein air peeing.

I know our priorities have shifted around here when we're sending texts like this between Main Street and our house.

  2. As the aunt of a rescue breeding dog, I can sympathize, and add my encouragement of keep on keeping on, early and often.

  4. so true! when we were housebreaking Minnie we did the same thing...pee and poop reports. my son and his wife have two chihuahuas and they are house dogs, not even walks outside, and so they are trained to those puppy pads. I don't have 'house' animals which I consider taking an animal out of it's natural habitat and forcing it to live in an alien environment. but then I think that about people and big cities with limited contact with nature too. Don't get me wrong, the animals (one cat and one dog) are in the house as much as they like which sometimes is a lot but they have as much access to the outdoors as they want. except at night. at night they get brought in.

  5. That is too funny. Keep up the good work. I don't like pee pads for they just teach a dog it is OK to pee in the house.

  6. I'm so glad Mamie is getting used to using the great outdoors, it's the natural way and of course it means no more pee pads inside the house.

  7. I laughed at your emoji texts. Glad she's learning how other four-legged critters do it. :-)

  8. LOL! Dogs ARE a challenge sometimes. Once Mamie gets the hang of going outdoors she won't want to go anywhere else!

  9. Be glad Mamie is a girl dog. After fifteen years of walking and begging and pleading with Pooh, our little Poodle, give him half a chance and he would mark his territory...inside the house. We loved him though and he was with us fifteen years.

  10. keep on keeping on with lots of praise when she goes outside. Taking them to the same spot in the yard will help:)
