Building a Better Mousetrap

And for once, I’m not speaking in metaphors.

Never let it be said that a water aerobics class filled with women over 60 can’t be a learning experience. In fact, I’ve gained all kinds of information – book titles, restaurant revues, and now another method of rodent control.

There we were, swishing and treading away, and we’d already pretty much covered the topics of weather, undependable car batteries, and the closing of our local Macy’s department store. Someone mentioned hearing an owl, someone else the fox in her yard, and from there we went to field mice and their increase in sociability – and numbers - when the temperatures plunge. Many of us are surrounded by woods and find that once fall fades away, we have visitors that take up permanent residence, not unlike Monty Wooley in The Man Who Came to Dinner.

Sweet twinkly Alice, who always looks like she’s about to offer you a homemade cookie, had what she swore was a sure-fire way to trap and kill.

For a step-by-step guide, see below.

Now you’ll have to pardon me. I need to go check the basement.

  1. I have seen something similar. Here the cats are our mousetrap. And serve as a pretty good discouragement. Which is just as well because I don't think either of them could be bothered actually catching the mice.

  2. That looks like it could actually work! Mice love peanut butter.

  3. I feel bad for the mice. We still have cats so luckily I don't need to worry about that yet.

  4. Glub glub glub! I get it now, but I had to figure out how it works. I drown my slugs in beer. :-)

  5. it will work I'm sure. I prefer the spring trap as it kills them instantly, mostly. less suffering than drowning.

    1. A person can get pretty cold-hearted after finding droppings in her belongings.

  6. Marty, I just finished reading "Word Power" and kind of got lost in that last paragraph. A little over my head...it doesn't take much, you know. :) Your grandfather sounds like a smart man. Anyhow I moved on to read "Building a better mouse trap". I'm sure that trick works but I would never forgive myself for intentionally drowning a cute little mouse. :) I found a mouse drowned in a bucket of water in the chicken lot one morning and worried for days that it was my fault. I placed a brick in the bucket so it will not happen again. I probably need some kind of help! :)

    1. Thanks for the heads-up. I just re-read that paragraph, and realized that just because I have an idea in my head, it doesn't mean I've managed to put it into words. Just did a quick re-write.
As for the mice, I hate the idea, too, but I've gotta get these guys out of the basement.
